"UberInjustice" is a deeply personal and evocative photography project that chronicles the harrowing journey of Michael Hancock and his family as they navigated the turbulent waters of a justice system that often seems anything but just. In 2018, Michael, an Uber driver in Denver, was arrested and charged with murder after defending himself during a confrontation with a passenger. The case garnered national attention, raising crucial questions about self-defense, racial bias, and the complexities of the legal system.

For 15 months, I had the privilege of documenting the emotional and legal battle that Michael’s family endured. This series captures the raw, unfiltered moments of a family under siege—from the heart-wrenching uncertainty that gripped them during his trial to the quiet, intimate moments of hope and resilience that sustained them.

I sought to reveal the layers of this ordeal: the strength it took to stand by their loved one, and the ultimate relief and joy of his acquittal—and the unyielding pursuit of justice.

This project is a tribute to the Hancock family’s resilience and a stark reminder of the injustices that persist in our society. It invites viewers to witness the impact of systemic flaws on real people, to empathize with their struggle, and to reflect on the broader implications of a case that could have ended very differently. It is a conversation on how we view justice, self-defense, and the human cost of our legal system.
