America’s Finest stems from my reflections on privilege, status, and power in America. While I am inspired and motivated by many, my heroes are the countless individuals who, despite facing obstacles, persevere and survive.
Jerome Cotton passed away in early 2025. He was the first vendor from the Denver Voice I photographed. His passing still saddens me. I am fortunate to have captured his portrait almost a decade ago.
Rhea, a vendor with the Denver Voice is very reserved. He has every reason to be. I have photographed him before, but he has never onced asked me to take a photo of him until recently. My own traumas have played parts in me shutting people out. I understand and acknowledge his vulnerability in letting me take his image.
Uncle Troy and I met on a the train six years ago. I have not seen or spoke to him since, but his words have stayed with me since. He remains an inspiration for my advocacy.
